Is Your Business Ready for ERP? A Pre-Project Checklist

Readiness does not mean everything is already organised. It means the business can make clear decisions during delivery. The first test is an accountable project owner who can resolve priorities and accept operational change.

Test the processes. Can the team describe the order, purchasing, or inventory cycle from beginning to end? If every employee has a different version, discovery is not ceremonial; it is a required deliverable before configuration.

Test the data. Customers, items, suppliers, and opening balances need owners, definitions, and cleaning rules. Moving every old file unchanged transfers errors into the new system and damages user confidence from day one.

Test the scope. What is in the first phase, what is explicitly out, and what are the acceptance criteria? A project that tries to solve everything at once is difficult to validate, train, and measure.

Test the users. Real representatives from sales, warehouse, finance, and operations should validate daily and exceptional scenarios. Generic training cannot replace testing returns, discounts, shortages, and delayed approvals.

The outcome is not simply ready or not ready. It is a risk and action register that reduces surprises and defines a first phase the business can operate with confidence.
