The Field Service Work Order Lifecycle
Visibility begins when a service request becomes accountable work with a date and documented result.

Capture the request against an asset or location with priority and diagnostic detail. A phone number and general note are not enough for planning or recurring-failure analysis.
Turn it into a work order with required skill, technician, time window, and expected parts. Scheduling should consider geography, availability, and priority—not only arrival order.
In the field, record arrival, work performed, time, parts consumed, evidence when needed, and an explicit reason when the order remains open.
At closure, update asset history, inventory, cost, and billing or warranty. First-time fix, response time, and repeat failure show service quality better than visit count.
